Diagnostics | Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a camera that is passed down your pet's windpipe or esophagus to allow visualization of your pet's larger airways, stomach or proximal small intestine. With greater effort, your pet's colon can also be evaluated with this tool. Endoscopy must be performed under general anesthesia and is useful in the following scenarios:
- To obtain superficial biopsies of stomach, proximal small intestine and colon.
- To evaluate for esophageal strictures or ulcers as well as stomach ulcers.
- To look for cancer of the esophagus or stomach.
- To remove smaller foreign bodies from larger airways, esophagus or stomach.
Endoscopy is wonderful in its limited use but is most often just an additional diagnostic tool used along with blood work, ultrasound, radiographs, patient history and physical examination.
